What Makes Buffy Extremely Sustainable:

Sustainable Shipping Practices

Buffy consolidates shipments into a single box whenever possible while offsetting carbon emissions from freight and customer shipments. They also make sure their shipping materials are FSC certified.

Making a Positive Impact with their Sustainable and Vegan Bedding

Eucalyptus Sheets

Their Eucalyptus Sheet Set has helped save 370 million liters of freshwater compared to making sheets with cotton. Eucalyptus also emits 24% less CO2e than cotton and doesn’t require pesticides when it is being grown.

Hemp Linen

Their Hemp Linen Sheet Set uses 99% less water to produce compared to cotton sheets. While it is being grown, hemp plants improve soil quality over time, increase biodiversity, “absorbs 5 times more CO2 from the air than trees, [and] it’s naturally resistant to pests” (Buffy.co).

Recycled Water Bottles

Buffy uses recycled water bottles for The Buffy Cloud Comforter and its pillows. In 2020 alone, Buffy helped to divert 7 million plastic bottles from the ocean and landfill by turning them into their signature fluffy stuffing.

Use of All-Natural, Recyclable, and Environmentally Friendly Materials

Buffy makes all its sheets from water-saving eucalyptus and hemp, dyes its sheets from natural materials, and uses recycled water bottles to provide comfortable insulation. A further breakdown of Buffy’s materials is found in the next section.

Why Buffy’s Materials are Amazing:

Eucalyptus Lyocell

Something the company is known for is called eucalyptus lyocell which is made from eucalyptus and creates a low environmental impact.

The solvent-spinning process that makes this material recycles process water and reuses any excess solvent “at a recovery rate of more than 99%, resulting in one of the lowest impact fibers on the planet” (Buffy.co).

This material is silky to the touch and is perfect for anyone who overheats at night. In addition, for any Eucalyptus Sheet Set, they use natural dyes like “turmeric, rose petals, bark, and gardenia to create [their] subtle colors” (Buffy.co).

Hemp Linen

Buffy also makes sheets and duvet covers from hemp linen because it absorbs five times more CO2 from the air than trees, is naturally resistant to pests, promotes biodiversity, improves the soil it is grown in and is more durable than other fabrics according to their website.

In addition to being a very breathable fabric, it also uses less land than cotton to produce. All of these factors lead to a product that puts any cotton product to shame in terms of sustainability and durability and is why Buffy has taken pride in its hemp products.

Recycled Water Bottles

In addition to the linens made from eucalyptus and hemp, their Buffy Cloud Comforter is made with recycled water bottles that have helped to divert 4,000,000 plastic bottles from going to the landfill and the ocean in 2020. With all of their other products that used recycled material, they have diverted a total of 7,000,000 plastic bottles in 2020.

The recycled plastic creates a filling that retains enough heat to keep you warm without making you overheat all while being hypoallergenic and cruelty-free.

How Buffy Product Feel:

Comforters

The Buffy Breeze Comforter

This plant-based comforter is made with eucalyptus lyocell for both the cover and the fluffy filling. Its temperature regulating qualities and 300 thread count make it cool to sleep with and heavenly to touch.

The Buffy Cloud Comforter

This comforter has a cover made from eucalyptus lyocell fibers and a filling made from recycled bottles. Each comforter recycles about 50 bottles and the fluffy filling is perfect for keeping in the perfect amount of heat throughout the night.

Either of these comforters will help make your bedding set up more sustainable and vegan while making your bed look very fluffy and comfy.

Eucalyptus sheets

The Eucalyptus Sheet Set is extremely cooling and smooth to the touch. Using less water than cotton and emitting less CO2e to produce, these sheets are a more sustainable bedding option.

They get softer the more you wash them and include corner ties that attach the Buffy comforters. All the dyes are made from natural materials, resulting in beautifully neutral and light colors.

Hemp sheets

The Hemp Linen Sheet Set is some of the most sustainable bedding out there. In addition to using ridiculously small amounts of water to produce, these sheet sets offer a lovely pop of color to any space and look good when the bed is made or freshly slept in. They are soft to the touch and breathable to sleep in.

Why Buffy is an Example of Good Design:

Overall Aesthetics

All of their designs are modern and sleek with soft colors that make any bed look amazing made or freshly slept in.

The Simplicity of the Design

Buffy does a great job at having simple designs that make their linens feel sophisticated while also feeling very down to Earth and homey.

Lasting Quality

The quality of their products is seen in everything from the stitching to the fabric weaving and every design choice in between. It is clear that this company is extremely conscientious of their impact on their customers’ lives and the planet we all share, so they take the time to make bedding that is heavenly to sleep in and doesn’t make anyone lose sleep over how it was made.

They also do wear-testing to create things with maximum durability and include instructions to best take care of the product to further increase its life span.

Design Adaptability

Buffy offers soft colors for their linens that are made from natural dyes and create products in a simple style that looks great in any space.

Ethical Integrity

Some light research revealed that Buffy uses ethical manufacturing processes, however, there was nothing on their website that talked specifically about it.

Environmental Conscientiousness

Buffy prides itself on using materials that are made from “entirely natural, recycled, or recyclable materials” and they have a goal of making products that are “either biodegradable or fully recyclable” (Buffy.co). While they have goals to continually improve their products, all of their bedding is sustainable and vegan.

They also plan to offset CO2 emitted from their entire supply chain and are constantly finding new ways to use less water in manufacturing. On top of all that, Buffy is also actively working towards a closed-loop system meaning that everything they take from the environment they replenish while not adding anything harmful. Talk about sustainable bedding!

Social Awareness

Buffy is very aware of their impact on the Earth and is actively working towards making as little of an impact as possible in every aspect of production.

Use of the Elements and Principles of Design

They don’t have many products that can use different elements and principles of design, but their use of pastel colors makes all their products feel elegant and homey at the same time.

Designing for the End-User

Buffy creates all its products with the end-user in mind, thinking about breathability, durability, and the overall quality of the product to help to improve the user experience and makes these products feel heavenly to the touch.

Ease of Use

Their products work exactly as intended, they ship quickly, and their website is easy to navigate with a lot of great information.

The Overall Experience

The overall experience of Buffy includes a website with great information, a free trial period to make sure you love their product before you buy it, sleeping with silky smooth eucalyptus sheets or extremely soft and cozy hemp sheets, and knowing you’re using a product that is made to last and doesn’t harm the Earth.

Are buffy products worth it?

This sustainable and vegan bedding company understands that eco-friendly can also mean beautiful. Considering the innovative nature of Buffy’s materials and overall impact, it is a company that people can feel good buying from. While the products can be more on the pricey side, they are quality pieces that are designed to last and are made with the Earth in mind.
